Cinna

When we slipped outside after a breakfast of eggs and dried meat, I was surprised to find half the pack gathered, loitering around the center of the village as if waiting for something.

“Ah, so everyone is ready,” the seeress said as she stepped outside.

I looked over my shoulder, my brows furrowed in confusion. Before she could answer, an excited murmur swept through the crowd, and I steeled myself as dozens of wolves drew closer, whispering alpha.

“What’s going on?” I asked, my heartbeat picking up speed.

“You have yet to address your people,” the seeress explained as she motioned to the crowd. “Before you leave, now would be a good time to leave words of wisdom, or any commands you might have for us.”

Commands? My mouth was suddenly dry as the desert beyond the mountains. I knew nothing about being an alpha, besides what I knew from my father. He’d always been a kind man, and didn’t so much command his people, as he urged them to work together.

“Pack Cinna!” the seeress called, drawing the attention of any wolf whose gaze wasn’t already trained on me. “Your alpha will have a word.”

I swallowed. Way to put me on the spot. “Pack Cinna?” I hissed at her, narrowing my eyes. Ever since I was little, it had been Pack Vaset, after my father. I wasn’t sure I liked the change.

“Yes,” the seeress said. “It’s your pack now.”

I sighed, even as my skin prickled with nerves. She was right. I did need to say something before I left. Even with my body partially drained of magic, I wanted to leave today. I had my wolf, and my quest clearer than ever. I didn’t want to waste a moment with Cassian out there somewhere, but my packmates must have waited all these years for another alpha. It wasn’t fair to leave without a word.

“Greetings,” I began lamely. I cringed at myself and forced my nervous hands to lay flat against my thighs. When I spoke next, I made a better effort to raise my voice for all to hear. “It’s been a while. I don’t know how well you all remember me, but I’m the daughter of Vaset and Mina, sister of Cassian.”

“Of course we remember you, Cinna.” I gazed across the crowd to find my old neighbors, the kind couple who had an awful time conceiving, but now had a chubby little baby with white hair gripped in her arms.

I couldn’t help smiling. “Thank you. I’m glad to be remembered, even after such a long time.”

“It’s been awfully quiet without you and your brother around,” another packmate said, Johan I think his name was. He was an elderly male with a long silver beard and keen blue eyes. He was the pack teacher once, taking care of the children during the day while the adults did their work.

“I can imagine.” My heart swelled at the same time that grief sent a pang of longing like a shard of ice piercing through my chest. “Then I gather you can understand why I need to leave as soon as possible.
